When world-renown reclusive mystery author Jonathan Wade decides that he’s ready to reveal his identity to the world, he decides to do something even more mysterious than what he writes in his novels – he chooses a little-known writer at an even lesser-known magazine to write his story.
Taylor Scott is chosen specifically for this assignment and has to spend two weeks with him to write her article. The only catch? She has to come alone to his farm up in Maine. The whole world knows that Wade is a recluse, but Taylor has reservations of her own about going into this kind of an agreement. For starters, no one knows what this man looks like – or anything about him, for that matter – and no one will know exactly where she is.
Mike Greene runs all-things Jonathan Wade. He knew Taylor years ago and is instrumental to her getting this interview. When she arrives up at the farm and the two of them get reacquainted, and old friendship turns to romance. As their time together moves forward, it becomes more about the two of them and less about the story that Taylor is there to write.
Lines get blurred and communications crossed and Taylor has to decide between writing the story that will launch her career or refusing to print it and having a chance at love
Yes, she’d been in a dating dry spell.
And yes, she said that it wasn’t really a big deal.
And yes, she was completely lying to herself.
This kiss, this amazingly searing, hot kiss was like nothing she had ever experienced before. Liar. Okay, once, with Mike, but clearly he had learned some things since then because this kiss was everything and then so much more. His hand slowly came around from the back of her head to cup the side of her face and before she knew it, his other hand came up to the do same. His skin was so warm and so rough against her face and yet it was extremely gentle.
It didn’t take much for Taylor to open to him – for her tongue to come out to slowly, deliciously dance with his. She edged closer and the swing swayed a bit but it only served to make Taylor reach out and curl her fingers into the front of his shirt. As gentle as his caresses were against her skin, his kiss grew more and more urgent. It wasn’t hard for her to keep up – she wanted this kiss more than her next breath. It was exciting to feel this wanted – this needed – as if he couldn’t breathe without her.
So badly she wanted to ask him if they could go inside, go upstairs, anywhere really, so that she could feel more of him. Taylor didn’t realize how badly she had missed the feel of a man’s body pressed against hers until just this moment. She was just about to voice it, she really was, when Mike lifted his head abruptly from hers. His breath was ragged as he rested his forehead against hers, his hands still cupping her face.
“Mike,” she panted softly, but didn’t get to finish.
“I’m not sorry for that, Taylor, but I also know that this isn’t the reason you’re here.” Without warning, he removed his hands and stood. Even in the darkness, she could see the battle warring within. His eyes were dark and stormy and his breathing still hadn’t settled. “Good night,” he said quietly and walked off of the porch until his body was swallowed by the darkness of the field.
About Samantha Chase
New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.
When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, blogging, playing way too many games of Scrabble on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.
